DON'T PRESS THE PANIC BUTTON... Thursday, 19 th March 2009, 8 p.m.
Anxiety
is a natural reaction to imagined or real danger,
panic is a state of extreme anxiety and fear – possibly in a
life-threatening situation. But why does our body send out signals of anxiety and panic when we are standing in a lift, queueing at the checkout or stuck in a traffic jam – or even at home, on our own sofa? The number of people suffering from panic or anxiety attacks is continuously on the increase – as is the number of people suffering from allergies and intolerances of various kinds. In both cases, we are dealing with an overreaction: In the case of allergies, the immune system overreacts to seemingly harmless substances such as pollen or certain foods. In the case of panic attacks, we are dealing with an overreaction to seemingly harmless situations such as the queue at the checkout or the ride in a lift. Together, we will discuss how to recognize a panic attack (many people are diagnosed only at a very late stage, physical examinations don’t show anything and leave people behind even more puzzled and anxious), what the possible backgrounds are and how a “panic syndrome” can be treated. I will put special emphasis on the options classical homoeopathy presents. Fee: EUR 7,50
