"Like cures like - similia similibus curentur!" -that is how Samuel Hahnemann, German physician and "discoverer" of Classical Homoeopathy, formulated the law of cure that he had observed in his work.Hahnemann had been translating a text by a Scottish physician, when he stumbled over the statement that the curative powers of a remedy called "Peruvian bark" in intermittent fevers were attributed to its bitter taste. He was a well-experienced doctor and pharmacist and was therefore not satisfied with that explanation. Instead, he experimented on himself: He took a small quantity of the drug and ... within a few hours he started to develop symptoms similar to those of intermittent fever. The symptoms disappeared after a few hours and only returned after he had taken another dosage of the drug. That was Hahnemann's first step on a long way of drug provings, at first experimenting only on himself, then on colleagues, the family and friends. Eventually, he had collected enough information to be convinced: A substance which can cause certain symptoms in healthy persons is capable of curing someoone who is suffering from an illness presentinga similar set of symptoms. In the context of Classical Homoeopathy, "symptoms" are not only physical, mental or emotional expressiosn of illness. Fears and anxieties, dreams, food cravings and aversions, temperature sensations, compulsions - everything remarkable is a symptom, a piece of the jigsaw that makes up what is in homoeopathy called the remedy picture. The aim of the first consultation, which usually takes around two hours, is to form a picture of the patient which is as comprehensive as possible. In a second step, that picture is matched with the remedy picture that is most similar: Like cures like.Homoeopathic remedies are made, among others, from plants, animals and minerals. The original substance goes through various stages of dilution and succussion, until it finally fully unfolds its entire curative powers. In Classical Homoeopathy, we do not strive to eliminate all symptoms as quickly as possible at all costs. Rather, the symptoms are understood as the body's and mind's language, as messages along the path of healing. We use them to try and understand what the body, mind and spirit are expressing in terms of what is causing dis-ease. The homoeopathic remedy answers, as it were, this request, and thus strengthens the life-force in order to initiate and sustain the healing process. In the course of the treatment, more and more symptoms become redundant, as their message is being understood and the person is treated according to his or her individual needs.Homoeopathic treatment is suitable for all persons, from the newborn to the aged. It is possible to treat acute as well as chronic conditions from A as in allergies, asthma and anxiety to Z as in zoster.
